Chan Poker is one of the new kids on the block, having just opened their doors in 2006, but they are growing quickly due to the
popularity of Johnny Chan, owner and spokesperson for the site. Johnny Chan is one of the most recognizable faces in poker,
having been immortalized in the movie "Rounders." Chan is an ultra-successful tournament poker player, having taken down the
World Series of Poker main event multiple times. He has won countless other tournaments, and is a very successful cash game player.
Chan is a fixture in the "Big Game" in Las Vegas. It is rare that you see such an accomplished cash game AND tournament poker
player. Chan Poker offers a standard mix of tournaments, SNG's and cash game play. The site spreads such games as Limit Hold'em,
No Limit Hold'em and Pot Limit Omaha.
Software / Graphics
As with any poker room, the graphics are really a personal choice. Some people love the graphics on certain sites, and some
people hate the graphics on certain sites. Personally, I enjoy the graphics on Chan Poker. The gameplay is easy to follow,
the pot and bet sizes are clearly labelled and easy to figure out, and the games flow smoothly. The lobby is very well laid-out,
and you should have absolutely no trouble finding the games that you want. I have no complaints whatsoever about the software
that is used for this site. Definite thumbs up from me.
Tournaments
Considering that Johnny Chan is one of the most well-known tournament players of all time, you would expect a wide array of
different tournaments on this site. You get exactly that with Chan Poker, and Johnny Chan might even drop by from time to
time to play a game with you. The site usually has 6-7 tournaments going off per hour, and the field sizes are pretty decent.
It is currently 3:53 am EST as I write this, and there is a $5 + $0.50 tournament that currently has 353 registered players.
That's pretty phenomenal. A site like Ultimatebet would likely have 25 players or so. There is a wide variety of different
tournaments, including No Limit Hold'em, Pot Limit Omaha, short-handed, Turbo, and Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo. If you enjoy playing
tournaments, you will certainly find everything that you need on this site.
Cash Game Play
Chan Poker features a wide array of different cash games. There are play money games and real money games. You have Limit Hold'em,
No Limit Hold'em, Pot Limit Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, 7 Card Stud, 7 Card Hi/Lo, and 5 Card Draw. The biggest Limit Hold'em games that
are spread on the site is $500/$1000, and the biggest No Limit Hold'em games are $50/$100. The cash games seem fairly popular
on the site, and you won't have any trouble finding a game, especially if you play at the lower limits. The rake is reasonable
on this site as well.
Pros
There is one pro only that is sponsored by this site, and that is Johnny Chan. Do you really need anyone more than that?
Two World Series of Poker championship bracelets, 10 World Series of Poker bracelets, Chan is also an extremely successful
cash game poker player and businessman. Everything that Johnny Chan touches seems to turn to gold, so there is no reason
to expect any different with Chan Poker. Chan is assembling a great team to manage his site, and I fully expect that it will
be one of the industry leaders in a few years.
Freerolls
I didn't see any mention of freerolls on either the main site (www.chanpoker.com) or when I logged into the poker lobby.
All of the listed tournaments required entry fees to be paid.
Promotions
As a fairly new site, Chan Poker doesn't have much in the way of promotions as of yet. Considering that Johnny Chan is
closely associated with the World Series of Poker, I would expect that he will offer some sort of WSOP packages as the
tournament draws closer. The site's biggest promotion is probably their First Deposit Bonus, which offers their players a
100% deposit bonus up to $1000. This is one of the most generous bonuses on the Internet, and a bonus that you should
definitely take advantage of.
Deposit Methods
Chan Poker currently offers three deposit methods: Click2Pay, Visa and Mastercard. According to the site, they are working on adding Webmoney and Moneybookers as payment options.
Customer Support
So far, so good. I sent their customer support two questions and both were answered promptly. Chan Poker has a great team
in place, and I am sure that they have invested heavily in providing adequate customer service.
