Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu Eliminated in First Round

Phil Ivey at the World Series of Poker 2010Round one of the 2011 National Heads-Up Poker Championship is now in the books, as the first day of play wrapped up just over an hour ago.

32 first round matchups took place on Friday, with the original field of 64 players being thinned down to 32.

Three of the biggest names in the poker world, Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu, failed to advance to the second round of play on Saturday. Phil Ivey succumbed to Daniel "jungleman12" Cates, Daniel Negreanu was dispatched by the always talkative Phil Laak and Phil Hellmuth was sent to the rail by David Benyamine.

It was not a good day for former National Heads-Up Poker Championship winners, as Phil Hellmuth, Ted Forrest, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson and Huck Seed all hit the rail. Two other former winners, Annie Duke and Paul Wasicka, did not participate in this year's event.
