The brand new FS1 (Fox Sports 1) channel will play host to the World Poker Tour's newest offering, the WPT Alpha8. The WPT Alpha8 will begin airing on FS1 in March of 2014.
What is the WPT Alpha8?
According to a press release that was circulated yesterday, the WPT Alpha8 is an exclusive series of "super high-roller poker tournaments" that will feature minimum buy-ins of $100,000. The tournaments will be held in "some of the world's most prestigious venues in North America, Europe, Asia, Asia and South Africa."
According to the World Poker Tour, each event will produce a total of four hours of television content. In addition, people who want to follow along as the tournament takes place can watch a live stream on WPT.com.
The first episode of the WPT Alpha8 will be broadcast at 10 pm EST on Sunday, March 16th, 2014 on FS1. The show is set to be hosted by Lynn Gilmartin. The first episodes will feature play from the WPT Alpha8 Florida, which is set to begin at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida on August 26th.
It will be interesting to see if the WPT will be able to attract the likes of Phil Ivey, Tom "durrrr" Dwan and Daniel Negreanu with this new series, as those players will help to attract the viewers that the WPT and FS1 are looking for.
