WSOP Main Event Gets Underway on SaturdayPublished on July 5th, 2014 4:27 am EST
The biggest and most prestigious tournament in all of poker, the World Series of Poker main event, officially kicks off on Saturday afternoon.
Day 1A of the 2014 World Series of Poker main event will officially get underway at 12 pm local time on Saturday afternoon. This year's main event features three opening day flights - Day 1A on Saturday, July 5th, Day 1B on Sunday, July 6th and Day 1C on Monday, July 7th.
After two full days of play for the three separate opening flights, the surviving players will combine into a single field for Day 3, which will take place on Thursday, July 10th. After that, play will continue until Monday, July 14th, which is when the final nine players in the event (the "November Nine") will be determined.
The tournament will be paused at that time and eventually resume on November 10th, with the main event winner being crowned on November 11th.
Last year's tournament attracted a total of 6,352 players, which resulted in the eighth largest WSOP main event in history. With a guaranteed first place prize of $10,000,000 this year, tournament officials are expecting an even larger turnout.
This year's World Series of Poker has already produced a number of memorable moments - George Danzer's multiple bracelet performance, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth's near misses, Phil Ivey's 10th bracelet and Daniel Colman's win in the BIG ONE For ONE DROP, just to name a few.
What does the main event hold in store for us? We'll soon find out, starting on Saturday afternoon.
