A Flush Is Five Cards of the Same Suit

Q: What is a Flush in Poker?

A: What is a flush in the game of poker?

Let's say that you are playing No Limit Hold'em poker. In your hand you have:

6 Diamonds
7 Diamonds

You decide to call a bet pre-flop as you are in the big blind and the flop comes:

Ace Diamonds
2 Diamonds
3 Diamonds

In this case, you have just flopped a flush.

In poker, a flush is when you have five cards of the same suit.

So, in this case, your flush is:

Ace Diamonds - 6 Diamonds - 7 Diamonds - 3 Diamonds - 2 Diamonds

A flush is a fairly strong hand in poker and beats hands like pairs, sets, and straights.

In this case, you would have an Ace High flush, though you could still be beat in the hand.

For instance, if your opponent holds the K/Q of diamonds, your flush would be beaten by theirs, as their flush would look like this:

Ace Diamonds - King Diamonds - Queen Diamonds - 3 Diamonds - 2 Diamonds

-

There are four types of hands that beat flushes in poker. They are:

1. Royal Flush
2. Straight Flush
3. Four of a Kind
4. Full House

A flush is the fifth strongest type of hand in poker, and is more powerful than straights, three of a kinds, two pairs, pairs and high cards.

What are royal flushes?

A royal flush is when you have a hand that has the 10, J, Q, K and Ace, and they are all of the same suit.

A straight flush is when you have five cards in a sequence that are all of the same suit - for instance, 3d/4d/5d/6d/7d. That is a straight flush.

-

A "flush draw" is when you are one card short of making a flush.

For instance, let's say that you have the Ace of Spades in your hand, along with the Queen of Diamonds, and the flop comes:

Qs-10s-7s

So, there are three Spades on the flop, plus you have the Ace of Spades in your hand.

In this case, you would have a "flush draw", as you are one card short of making a flush.

-

One last note on flushes in poker.

The potential of hitting a flush is what increases the value of a suited hand.

The potential of hitting a flush is when a hand like A/K of spades is stronger than A/K offsuit, as A/K of spades is more likely to turn into a flush compared to A/K offsuit.
