Definition of Micro Stakes



What does the term "micro stakes" mean in the world of poker? What is meant by the term "micro stakes"?

In poker, the term "micro stakes" refers to poker games that cost very little to buy into.

For instance, let's say that you sit down at a $0.01/$0.02 No Limit Hold'em cash game. This would qualify as a "micro stakes" game.

The King explains the poker term Micro Stakes.  Provides an example as well.  Dictionary.Generally speaking, any cash game that has a maximum buy-in of up to $25 is considered to be "micro stakes".

As you can probably imagine, the quality of play at these levels is relatively low, as these games are mostly comprised of recreational players that might log in for a few hours on a weekend to play.

Any "grinders" will be playing higher levels, or moving up at their first chance.

Almost all of the best players in the world started at micro stakes, so there is certainly no shame in starting at these levels, as you have to learn somewhere.

Generally speaking, playing tight, solid poker will make you money at the micro stakes.
