Definition of Soft Play

What does the term "soft play" mean in the world of poker? What is meant by soft playing?

Let's say that you and your best friend decide that you are going to play in a tournament at your local casino.

The King explains the meaning of the term Soft Play when it comes to tournament poker.Going into the tournament, you both agree that you are not going to get involved in any big pots with each other. If you are ever heads-up against each other, you will both simply play very conservatively in order to avoid all-time situations.

After all, this will increase the chances of one or both of you reaching the final table, right?

What you are describing is something called "soft playing". Soft playing is most certainly cheating, though it can be very hard to prove.

Players should be trying their best to win the maximum amount of chips in every hand, regardless of who they are playing against.

By "soft playing", you are gaining an advantage over the other players at the table.

In short, soft playing is an agreement between two or more players to "take it easy" on each other, in order to avoid potentially eliminating one of the players from the tournament.

For obvious reasons, this is not permitted.
