According to ESPN (link below), Voulgaris will serve as Director of Quantitative Research and Development. ESPN notes that one of Voulgaris' functions will be to "help examine on-court strategy in big-picture ways".

Many people will follow Voulgaris on Twitter for his insightful commentary during NBA games. Voulgaris caught the eye of Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, and this eventually led to Voulgaris taking a position with the Mavericks.

Mark Cuban is certainly one of the most forward-thinking owners in the NBA, and this announcement isn't a big surprise, as Cuban is constantly pressing for edges for his team. Voulgaris is a very good hire for the club, as his in-depth knowledge of the game of basketball led him to become one of the world's top professional sports gamblers.

The hire also shows the changing perception towards sports betting from major sports leagues. There is practically no chance that this hire would have taken place even five years ago - if it had, the club probably would have kept quiet about it.

Now, with leagues like the NBA embracing sports betting and states having the ability to offer legal sports gambling if they choose, things are quickly changing.

With Voulgaris' new position with the Dallas Mavericks, you can probably safely assume that he will be posting far less on Twitter and making far fewer appearances in high buy-in poker tournaments.
