Definition of Picked Off
What is the definition of the term "picked off" as it applies to the world of poker? What does being "picked off" mean in poker?
In the game of poker, being "picked off" occurs when your bluff is called by one of your opponents.
Bluffing is an important part of the game of poker, but it obviously does not feel very good to be "picked off" by an opponent.
Let's take look at an example of being "picked off":
Action folds around to you on the button. You look down at Ah-Kh and raise it up. The SB folds and the BB calls.
The flop comes 2c-6c-Qh. The BB checks, you bet and he calls.
The turn brings the 6d. The BB checks, you bet and he calls.
The river brings the 3c. The BB checks once again, you overbet and he calls after a bit of thought.
You turn over your A-K for nothing, while your opponent triumphantly flips over As-2s for a pair of Twos. You turned your strong starting hand into a bluff, and your opponent "picked it off".
