Vanessa Selbst Goes Back-to-Back

Vannesa Selbst stareVanessa Selbst accomplished something remarkable earlier tonight, taking down her second straight NAPT Mohegan Sun title. Selbst took home $450,000 for her victory, which gives her over $4 million in total lifetime tournament earnings.

Selbst was able to take down the tournament despite the fact that she entered heads-up play significantly behind in chips. Dan Shak, who ended up finishing in second place for $254,000, started heads-up play with nearly three times as many chips as Selbst (8,650,000 vs 3,025,000).

Selbst was able to close the gap after the first dozen hands of heads-up play. The pivotal hand of the Shak vs Selbst battle took place a few hands later, when Selbst flopped middle set and doubled up against Shak's middle pair. Despite a valiant effort that saw him double up multiple times, Shak was never able to fully recover and was eliminated after roughly 60 hands of heads-up play.

The final hand of heads-up play came when Shak committed the last of his chips with Jh-7h after a flop of Ks-7d-3s. Unfortunately for Shak, Selbst had flopped top two pair. The turn brought the 5h, giving Selbst her second straight NAPT Mohegan Sun title.

As mentioned, Selbst's victory earlier tonight gives her over $4 million in total lifetime tournament cashes, which puts her at #3 on the women's all-time money list. Only Kathy Liebert ($5.8 million) and Annie Duke ($4.27 million) have earned more money than Selbst.

Selbst has enjoyed an unbelievable run since April of 2010.

In addition to her two wins at the NAPT Mohegan Sun, Selbst also took down the Partouche Poker Tour main event ($1,648,470). Selbst also turned in a 4th place finish in the EPT London High Roller event ($226,910) and an eighth place finish in the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship.
