Definition of Continuation Bet
What is a "continuation bet" in poker? What is the definition of the term "continuation bet"?
In poker, a "continuation bet" is when a person leads out with a bet after raising on the previous street.
Let's take a look at an example to fully illustrate the usage of the term "continuation bet":
Example
You are dealt A-A in early position, so you put in a standard 3X raise. Action folds around to the big blind, who decides to make the call.
The flop comes Kh-8c-7h. The big blind checks, so you put out a continuation bet of approximately 3/4 the size of the pot. The big blind checks his cards and folds.
This was a "continuation bet" as you were the pre-flop raiser.

By raising pre-flop, you are telling the rest of the table that you have a strong hand. By raising pre-flop, you have the advantage when the flop is dealt, as you have shown strength previously in the hand.
By putting out a "continuation bet" after the flop is dealt, you are continuing the story that you have a strong hand, and that the flop has done nothing to change that. Unless the flop hit the BB hard, they will likely fold to your aggression.
